New Art- Feeling Carpy

‘Feeling Carpy’

16″ x 20″

oils and mixed media on gallery wrapped canvas

Needs no frame, painting extends around edges of painting, comes ready to hang

Will be available for sale on the web site www.badkittyartstudio.com

Hello world, just stopping in and sharing some of the new work that is finished (finally) in the studio. The one above is the one I got the best picture of, my camera is dead! How will I get along without my trusty camera!! *wailing and tearing of hair* Okay…how about if anyone out there…tap, tap, tap; is this thing on?…has a good digital camera they want to trade for art of equal value, if that sounds like you, hit me up here.

The carp was one of those paintings that just found its own way out. I’ve been feeling under the weather of late and dealing with feeling pretty crappy on a sometimes overwhelming scale for a while now. It sucks big time. So, when I feel bad I try to work and it for the most part doesn’t work…sometimes its because of mechanical failure, like my hands won’t work, or its a: we are doing everything from bed today day,  that’s life some days. Some days its just not possible to work in the studio and work the day job too. And I’ve taken on a big commission, a really fun pin-up girl. I have spent the last three weeks of studio time working on that painting. Carpy was a doodle with charcoal and gesso while resting. I thought it was a little funny that I was laying, in bed,  feeling really crappy and I drew a fugly carp splashing around. I spent a week, just messing around with it little snatches of time and then I spent three weeks just looking at it and hating it, and then I woke up one morning and finished three paintings in one day. It happens like that, when it happens. I ended up really liking the crusty old carp…he makes me smile at the ugly, he makes me grin at the feelings that threaten to rock my world. Just keep swimming, eat off the bottom if you have too, to survive, but just know when you can surface again…you still sparkle and shine in the sun like the living tapestry you are, but I wouldn’t suggest trying to catch or eat that tough old carp…I hear they have a lot of sharp, tiny bones…that will stick in your throat…all bones those fish are.

If this fish belongs to you…let me know and we will get it swimming your way. (couldn’t resist)

Hardy ha-ha.

New Art- Positive Reduction

September 4, 2010 6 comments

‘Positive Reduction’

18″ x 24″ x 2″

oils on canvas

Will be available for purchase on my web site in the 2010 gallery.

Here is the quote that helped inspire the work:

The work was like peeling an onion. The outer skin came off with difficulty… but in no time you’d be down to its innards, tears streaming from your eyes as more and more beautiful reductions became possible.
-Edward Blishen

This abstract, mixed media oil painting took a year to complete. You’ll be saying…”no way BAD! Kitty, really?” (maybe not but I like to think about you all reading this and in my head you talk back, sometimes…no I’m not crazy, ok maybe a little bit) The simple answer is yes. I have painted this canvas 5 times. I hated each painting, and it would get thrown in the corner to wait until I had run out of supplies again. Well, I ran out of supplies. I picked up the cursed canvas and plopped it down on the easel. Then I stared reducing the very abstract color riot that was there. It started working! I felt something give inside my head and I finished this work over the last week. I had to wait for the paint to dry each time, because…like I said I’m outta supplies and therefore no drying alkids. OMG! I hate waiting for paint to dry, but nothing but oils give the depth of color and texture, IMHO, of course.

The picture of the wooden dressmakers dummy is one that I have had in my special pile for years, he had to become an enlightened fairy with dusty butterfly wings for this world. Dontcha’ think? Yeah, me too. Prepped and glued and textured him in there and bam! it feels good and done now. The background is a sunny orange/yellow, but very soft. I really liked how free this one made me feel…I think the whimsy may be returning on its own. Isn’t that nice?

Have a great day and thanks for being here.

New Art- Impersonal Divinity -it’s what you make of it.

August 27, 2010 1 comment

“Impersonal Divinity”

18″ x 24″

Oils on gallery wrapped canvas, needs no frame, painted sides and comes ready to hang

Available for purchase on my web site in the 2010 Gallery

Here are the quotes that helped this work along its path:

“If therefore my work is negative, irreligious, atheistic, let it be remembered that atheism — at least in the sense of this work — is the secret of religion itself; that religion itself, not indeed on the surface, but fundamentally, not in intention or according to its own supposition, but in its heart, in its essence, believes in nothing else than the truth and divinity of human nature.”
-Ludwig Feuerbach

AND

“Not necessity, not desire –no, the love of power is the demon of men. Let them have everything –health, food, a place to live, entertainment –they are and remain unhappy and low-spirited: for the demon waits and waits and will be satisfied.”
 -Friedrich Nietzsche

Many cultures worldwide, have mythology about Gods, Goddesses, and people who sport horns. The overall history for horned people is, (with the exception of some forms of Christianity, who demonized ancient mythology to created the Devil, and to help convert pagans (witches) into their belief system) that horns represent a connection with a higher power, the God-head, the Creator. In most circles of world study, this is commonly is refered to as the Horned God Myth.

I use horns to represent the animal/divine earth nature, the connection to higher-power wisdom, and to the feelings of rebellious freedom. I take back the history and reinterpret it with a modern twist.

This painting is a work about you, the viewer. Depending upon your internal dialogue, your systems of belief and faith, your systems of fear and self-awareness, your reaction to this work is revealing of your nature at this time. Do you see a picture of the devil? A shaman? A mythological creature? Evil? Good? Provocation on your belief system? It all depends on your mental state and state of awareness, personal history and levels of judgement. I think that is interesting.

This work is about the act of demonization that seems to be running rampant in our modern culture. Don’t understand something, someone, some other religion, culture, lifestyle? Well, then fear, hate and demonization are the order of the day. I don’t agree with that stance, I know there is a middle ground, a gray area if you will.

That is why he is painted in gray-scale, to represent that middle ground. You might think this work is of a certain race of human, but is he? His wide nose, large lips, broad forehead, may define him to you as being of one race or another. It’s not clear and that’s the point. That is my point. You don’t know, but your gut reaction to this simple work, should tell you a little more about yourself. Are you happy? Mad? Interested in the history? What are you feeling? Please feel free to share that feeling or to not share it as you see fit. Just don’t ignore that feeling, live with it and let it help you sort out what you really believe is true for you. It’s important that we discover our own truths, so that we might better facilitate understanding and peace amongst ourselves.

I want to convey my thoughts on the unknown, the different, the sacred. Those thoughts are simply this, demonization of the different is an act of violence and hatred. It never elevates it only destroys what is possible. It is evil. It is destructive and immoral. It is an act of hate and fear. It is useless to human beings, unless…it is being used to enslave, subordinate and control.

The most glorious thing about being human is that under everything, the skin, the religion, the cultures, the rules…we are all human. Blood, bone, organs, hearts, spirit and mind. Under our skin, and clothing we are truly a family of human. The differenced between us are our greatest gifts to each other. Diversity is freedom. We can reach a place where we are all on the same level…that of being human. I don’t have to agree with you, to love you, to learn from you or to protect your freedom ( or my own) to be or become what you (or I) desire to be.

It’s  true.

We don’t have to draw lines in the sand over difference, we could choose to see that we are all one family, the family of man. We could stop the desire to control, to rule, to over protect the ideas of self, to have the most of anything or everything in order to have more power. We could choose to embrace the differences and stop trying to rule over each other. We could choose love, peace and understanding…we really could.

This work is a celebration of the art of evolution. The evolution of wisdom, peace, understanding and virtue that I know humanity could one day reach. I pray everyday for this to be so. I pray for peace, and I know it begins within me and you….one heart and soul at a time.

Thanks for being here today, I sure appreciate you all.

New Art- At the edge of the World

“At the edge of the World’

16″ x 20″

Oils on flat canvas panel

Will need framing or mounting for hanging

Available for purchase on my web site in the 2010 gallery.

Here is the quote that inspired the work:

“Just as the wave cannot exist for itself, but is ever a part of the heaving surface of the ocean, so must I never live my life for itself, but always in the experience which is going on around me. It is an uncomfortable doctrine which the true ethics whisper into my ear. You are happy, they say; therefore you are called upon to give much.”
-Albert Schweitzer

I was a child, growing into a young woman on the Gulf of Mexico in southern Florida. I spent my young adult years on the coast of Oregon, the mighty Pacific was my friend, teacher, healer and my first taste of real freedom.

I live in Kentucky right now, and for the first time in my life, I can not go to the edge of the world. It’s so weird being land locked in this way, and I’ve been dreaming of ocean breezes, clean water, wind, birds and salt tinged air.

In these pictures the top two are clear and the skin tones are right, the background  is more right in the bottom picture. ARGH! Taking pictures is not my forte.

I saw this beautiful picture of a full figure model on the beach in a magazine a long time ago, she was so achingly beautiful, so I tore the page out of some forgotten magazine and kept it for years for inspiration. I used that picture as a loose model for this woman, for this projection of myself walking free, into the salty wind at the edge of the world. Where is your internal edge of the world? What do you see when you go there?

Thanks for being here today, I sure appreciate you all.

Pray for peace,

Heather

New Art- The Goddess #2

‘The Goddess Series #2′

16″ x 20″

oils on flat canvas panel, will need mounting or framing for hanging

Available for sale on my web site in the 2010 gallery

Here is the quote that moved this work along:

“This, I submit, is the freedom of a real education, of learning how to be well-adjusted. You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t. You get to decide what to worship.
Because here’s something else that’s weird but true: in the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship — be it JC or Allah, be it Yahweh or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles — is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It’s the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It’s been codified as myths, proverbs, cliché.”

-David Foster Wallace

As I move through the work I find that I am rediscovering, in  way, my love for imaginative play. I can create anything I can think of. It’s like the very best kind of magic, really. If I want a world where people have the heads of animals and birds, I can make it happen It’s playful and introspective and addictive. As each of the Goddesses are born I feel a little more interested to see what happens next. Sometimes I feel like I am only a tool and the universe uses me as it sees fit, a little nudge here, and a little sufferng there. It keeps me moving right along, and these images keep making their way into my brain pan and I have no choice but to bring them to life. It’s all good, I’m having fun and enjoying the playfulness that my inner world affords me. I hope you enjoy it too.

Have a great day, and thanks so much for being here today.

New Art- Dreamscapes

‘Dreamscapes’

24″ x 18″

oils on gallery wrapped canvas

Finished sides, needs no frame, ready to hang

Available for purchase on my web site in the 2010 gallery.

Here is the quote that helped inspire and shape the work:

“I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now? Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.
-John Lennon

I spent a few weeks on this one, I don’t know that I even really like it, but I needed to paint it and more importantly, finish it. It started with a few dreams that finally came together all at once. I got up and drew this out. As I started painting I figured out that it wasn’t going to make sense, it’s a painting of a dream for goodness sakes. I just went with it. The robin is sitting on my idea of brain neurons, the ideas sparking though the incredible highway of connective tissue. The rest is well…dream stuff. The lion-headed woman is laying down for some Dreamtime of her own, near the incredibly blue lake and amongst the sweetness of the flowers.

I don’t know a lot about the why of this work, only that it just is.

I hope you enjoy it, let me hear from you all, it always makes my day.

Pray for peace,

Heather

New Art- The Blue Pair #2

‘The Blue Pair #2′

24″ x 18″

Oils on gallery wrapped canvas

Needs no frame, painted sides, ready to hang

Available for purchase on my web site in the 2010 gallery.

Here is the inspiration for this work:

“Look, I don’t want to wax philosophic, but I will say that if you’re alive you’ve got to flap your arms and legs, you’ve got to jump around a lot, for life is the very opposite of death, and therefore you must at very least think noisy and colorfully, or you’re not alive.”
Mel Brooks

The Blue Pair was so much fun, I love these silly blue footed birds so very much. They crack me up, I smiled the entire time I painted this pair. These birds are the Blue-footed Booby, click on the hyper link to learn more about them.

I have some other updates coming soon, the art is flowing like water ovah here…so stay tuned.

New Art- Heron at Sunset

“Heron at Sunset”

20″ x 16″

Oils on flat canvas panel

Available for purchase at my web site in the 2010 gallery.

Just finished this new painting this morning and wanted to share. I could not get a really good picture because of the rainy, icky weather, so this is the best picture for now. I’ll try for better ones later today. I have another painting already on the easel and almost done so I want to get back to work! LOL

This painting reminded me of being a girl in Florida and watching the birds. I love the way the sunset color is staining the water and the neck of this magnificent bird. The shiny spots in the picture are just wet paint…it’ll all be seamless when it’s dry, which might take a few days with all this rain. It’s a bright painting, but not overly bright. I enjoyed the heck out of painting it.

Hope you like it too, let me hear from you! :)

Have a great weekend,
