New Art- I know why-Original oil painting

‘I know why’

16″ x 20″

Oils on flat canvas panel. Will need framing or mounting for hanging

Will be available on my web site in the 2010 gallery

Here is (the part of) a poem that inspired the work:

What dreams we have and how they fly

Like rosy clouds across the sky;

Of wealth, of fame, of sure success,

Of love that comes to cheer and bless;

And how they whither, how they fade,

The waning wealth, the jilting jade —

The fame that for a moment gleams,

Then flies forever, — dreams, ah — dreams!

~Paul Laurence Dunbar

I worked on this painting for many weeks…a little at a time. It’s self-portrait, a mirror and an explanation of my observations of self awareness. It’s a visual poem.

I hope you enjoy the work.

Heather

New Art- Age of Man

‘Age of Man’

16″ x 20″

oils on flat canvas panel, will need mounting or framing to hang.

Available for purchase on my web site in the 2010 gallery.

Here is the song that made this painful and angry work, Okay again:

One love, one heart
Let’s get together and feel all right
Hear the children crying (One love)
Hear the children crying (One heart)
Sayin’, “Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right.”
Sayin’, “Let’s get together and feel all right.”
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

Let them all pass all their dirty remarks (One love)
There is one question I’d really love to ask (One heart)
Is there a place for the hopeless sinner
Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?
Believe me

One love, one heart
Let’s get together and feel all right
As it was in the beginning (One love)
So shall it be in the end (One heart)
Alright, “Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right.”
“Let’s get together and feel all right.”
One more thing

Let’s get together to fight this Holy Armageddon (One love)
So when the Man comes there will be no, no doom (One song)
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
There ain’t no hiding place from the Father of Creation

Sayin’, “One love, one heart
Let’s get together and feel all right.”
I’m pleading to mankind (One love)
Oh, Lord (One heart) Whoa.

“Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right.”
Let’s get together and feel all right.
(Repeat)

~Bob Marley

This oil painting was created for the release of the passionate anger I have been feeling about the Oil Spill crisis. Using bold colors, and text from the Bob Marley song, “One Love”, I painted this work at least three times before accepting that sometimes anger does not make pretty art.  With a modern, pop art kind of feeling, this artwork made me work though my anger and get down to the brass tacks.

I feel like we are a nation of complainers. I don’t think we are really apathetic about our state of reality, I do think we sometimes mistake pointing out what is wrong for doing something about it.

I was in Mississippi just a few months after Katrina. I remember feeling so hopeless and scared for all the people in the path of the flooding. I remember feeling amazed at the lack of accountability and help that came in response to the living crisis. I felt small, I felt helpless. Then I got mad. Then I painted four paintings about those feelings. I painted out being a pissed of Southern woman, (that’s a lot of work my friends). I sold those works while I was in Mississippi and I then found 2 real families that were in trouble and fleeing from the disaster. I gave them the money, anonymously. I did what I could do, not for all of them but those that I could reach.

What can I give? What can I do for the people and the earth? Not much, I am only one person. I think that is part of the problem. We can Facebook  and tweet about the horror of all this. We can social network, we can blog. We can donate millions of dollars to huge charities. We can get off our butts and go help clean up. We can rally together and fight the government for change and safety. We can do many things, as one. One Heart. One Love. Let’s get together and feel alright.

I will find a family or two, like I have always done, and I will donate 100% of all profits made from the sale of this work and/or any others works I may do in this vein. I will donate all profits to those families, and know that one person can do some little good in this world. Will you join me? Will you create something and share it with the world?  Will you join with me as one people of earth, and do something for someone else? Will you act with one heart? Can you act with One Love?

I am but one person, and I am mighty.

Pray for peace,

Heather

Hello all! How was your Easter Weekend? Ours? Well, so nice that you asked…it was blissful. We don’t do Easter as a holiday ourselves, but we do enjoy the renewal of spring and the natural good energy that arises from the powerful day that many celebrate. I harnessed that good energy this weekend and worked in the garden and painted some small canvases for practice. These are those little canvases. They are side stapled but I did paint them black so they [staples] don’t show. I figure they will look just awesome in frames, which will be cheap and easy to find just about anywhere. They are fun and bright and full of good loving energy. Lexington is a very pretty place in the spring, but I have learned that because of all the sports and horses, it can feel a little like a big machine that fires up. The horse tracks open, the fancy cars and motorcycles start showing up, people are all exited about their sports teams and booze makers. It’s different from spring in the NW; different can be good, too.

So, I spent time playing and letting my feelings play in the color choices not the picture painting. It was freeing and I am enjoying going back to explore the world of abstracts. It’s  enlightening to let it all go and paint by intuition alone. I need this right now. I feel some of my works have become static. I don’t want to paint from examples, I want to create by imagination and intuition, I want to create the example itself. Abstract work is the way for me to get there. Expect a lot more of this work from me for a while, I am on and adventure of exploration, won’t you come along for the fun?

Have a great day, thanks for being here! Let me hear from you!

Raw & radiant,

5. Do What? – ACEO

Hello everyone!  I’ve been busy, these are the best of my new fun armchair art form, the ACEO. I’ve wanted to challenge myself to the tiny format for some time and this last week I’ve been hard at it. These  are what I think are the best of my efforts. I’ve got another 5-6 of them and I’ll show them to you all a little later on in another post. Well…what do you think? I had a good time drawing them all and the challenge of developing a BAD! Kitty style in the form was fun for me. It made me stretch some muscles and stick to something long enough to see if I like it. I do, they are fun to work on from the comfort of my chair at night. They keep me from watching T.V. and I can still be with the family while I work. And it’s just fun to draw like that for a while, as I never practice my drawing skills often enough. All win-win, right?

So I think I’ll post these on the web site, and probably on eBay too. Just for shits and giggles, what the hell, right? They might even have a chance over at etsy…but we will have to see.

Well that’s all from me today, I’m going to be posting a eBay update on Monday, we are in week 9 of the project now. So, I’ll tallying up the numbers and letting you all know my progress. I’ll also be starting a new art auction on Monday too, so I’ll have the links up and all that good stuff for you all then. See ya in the funny pages….

Love to all,

Heather

Betty was fun to work with. She’s a high flying, adrenaline junkie. I mean she would have to be right? Those kicks on a rope ladder? Well she’s a might more brave than I am at the very least.

This series is turning out to be a lot of fun to do and I am once again enjoying myself and painting what ever pleases me. The economy can do what it likes and the bone crushing wheels of capitalism can keep turning, and I’ll be here painting what ever I like and loving my life. Waiting for the fickle light of this economy to shed its light on me once again. I am enjoying this respite from the shows and constant marketing and loving the fact that I am a artist…in good times and in bad…I am an artist. That’s enough for me right now. :) Sales like I am used to (over the past 11 years of being a full-time artist) will return to better levels…someday. I can wait. This has been good for me, I am self directing my artwork in a way that has not been entirely possible for many years. I am not painting what is selling, I am for now, painting what feels good and re-discovering my work in a new way. It’s really great. As you can see I’ve not quit marketing all together, but the traveling shows were just not an option this year and that’s ok!

Hey, oh yeah…todays my birthday. I am 40. Can you belive that? I mean really…me 40?! WTF? Well…Okay, it’s not so bad…I’m having a relaxing day at home with the family. My Mate Man has just acquired a new job, one much more befitting of his abilities I might add, and after waiting for 18 months to get this job, we are all very happy for him. My kids are both on the honor roll for the first term, now continuing a 3 year run of both of them being on the honor roll every grading period. It’s cool that they are into school and getting as much out of it as they can. We are now in middle school and they still want to do their best…no complaints from this corner. We now have insurance again too…I mean three years with no health coverage was a living hell and expensive too. I’m all for reform and a public option, but I am also relived that we are no longer in that boat for the time being. Whew! I can get my cancer panels done and my sore tooth fixed. Life is good I tell you.

So, in short my,  life is getting pretty groovy after three years of crapola. And thats great and all, but I guess the nicest thing is that all of the getting better stuff really has not changed me/us. I was happy even when we were poor and struggling every day (that was three days ago, btw) because I choose to be happy. So now that it’s easier to be happy,( and it is easier to be happy with money and health insurance, Oh yeah it is) I’m still just happy that my family is whole and well and this is just a chapter in the story. Nothing last forever, so we will just enjoy the good times as well as we did the bad. 40 years of living hard as taught me well…I choose happy. No matter what is going on. I choose happy and love first…the rest is all logistics. Every day above ground is good. Keep it simple and choose happy where you can. Train your mind for the situation at hand, what ever that may be.

Be well and have a great day!

“Tomatoes and oregano make it Italian; wine and tarragon make it French. Sour cream makes it Russian; lemon and cinnamon make it Greek. Soy sauce makes it Chinese; garlic makes it good.”

What does that quote mean? Heck if I know, I just liked it.

James Baldwin (1924 – 1987)

This work is paper on heavy card stock then laminated. I am working on a large canvas mixed media work, have been for a week or more now. I also was finally able to unpack all of the studio boxes full of the paper I hauled across the country. Gave up space in the trailer to make room for a few boxes of paper, vintage pictures, collected fine hand made paper, vintage magazines, snips of pictures, pages ripped out of books because I could only afford so much weight in the trailer for my enormous book collection. In sorting, and sorting I have been collage/mixed media crazy. It’s so fun to pull out the bags and tins that I carefully sorted and packed so many moons ago. This one small collage came from the sorting effort. I needed to create, had little time, and a small box of pr-cut images. The laminator got unpacked…and that’s all she wrote folks. It came together pretty quick and in the moment.
This work is a little about anger, a little about family life, a little about humanity, a little about not enough love, a little about fire in the belly, a little about fear, a little about personal power…a little about me.
I love collage and mixed media for the effect that it has on my brain. I can’t think beyond does this fit? Is that right? Is this what I want to say? Ohhh, can I fit that in? I love it.
I hope everyone is enjoying their day in the world today,

‘Natural State’

36″ x 24″

Oils

The quote that goes with the work:

“Born alone to escape thoughts conceived within a dying star.”

 ~Jordan Couch

Hello everyone,

this is my newest work, completed for the Artist Challenge “Sun for CBS Morning Show” It’s my version of the sun, in all it’s intense, messy glory. The background is a black/blue over turquoise and marbled to look alive and vibrant, not a flat black.

The sun itself is 5 colors of red from rust, o fire engine and orange and three shades of yellows. Laid in over each other in layers, the colors shine and meld together in a very excited manner. As it should be, we are talking about the surface of our sun, after all.

I had a lot of fun working on this one, I think that shows through, my joy in being able to do what I was put here to do…paint!

I hope you all enjoy this new work, and that you are all having a great day.

More later….and this work will be up for sale on the web site today, so if it’s meant to be yours, just hit the link below and shop away. Don’t forget that I offer interest free art lay-a-way too!

New Art-wishing stars and a love story

February 17, 2009 2 comments

‘ A love story ‘

20″ x 16″

finished sides, needs no frame

oils, plaster, vintage drink coasters from the 50′s and then covered in resin

Here is the quote for this work:

“The truth is that there is only one terminal dignity-love. And the story of a love is not important-what is important is that one is capable of love.”

~Helen Hayes (1900 – ?)
There is no black border on this work, it’s just  the best picture that I took and it was jut off from center, so I let a little of the background show.
close up shots

‘Wishing Star #2′

10″ x 10″

finished sides (painted silver)

needs no frame ready to hang

acrylics, glitter(s) fine and thick, hand-cut and hammered metal star, vintage crystals, vintage jewelry, flat backed marbles, mirrors and all covered in resin

Here is the quote for this work:

“If I could wish for my life to be perfect, it would be tempting but I would have to decline, for life would no longer teach me anything.”  Allyson Jones

‘Wishing Star #3′
10″ x 10″
oils, plaster, a gold leafed real starfish, flat backed marbles, text on vellum, mirrors, polished semi precious stones and resin
Needs no frame, (can’t be framed, I used plaster around the edges and then covered it in resin too) ready to hang
Here is the quote for this work:

“Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair. I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy – ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss.  I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what at last I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved. Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.”

~Bertrand Russell (1872 – 1970)
